The 12th edition of Fashion Preview took place at the Technological Arts Society (SAT) on Wednesday. It's a major event for Montreal designers. The works of about a dozen Montreal fashion and fashion accessories creators were highlighted. Buyers, media and fashion lovers were present to discover the latest collections. Created by Emanuela Lolli in 2014, Fashion Preview brings established and new faces to the market and lets the fashion-savvy discover the talent coming out of the city. The financial reality has changed drastically in the past years, said Lolli. "We used to have provincial and municipal subsidies. Now we have only a little amount from MMode (municipal subsidy) but nothing from the provincial government, " she said, adding that everybody is volunteers. "That's why we only did one day instead of three, " she said. Lolli said she hopes the provincial government will support the event in the future. Local fashion schools always have a strong representation at the event. For this 12th edition, the Cégep Marie-Victorin fashion school presented SIGNAL, a capsule collection by fashion design graduates.
"We invite brands to our studio all the time, " he adds. "Likewise, we recently met Brandon [Svarc] of Naked & Famous Denim. He invited us to his head office, gave us a full tour and talked with us for hours. It was very humble of him, considering we had just met. " Molly Spittal, founder of leather goods brand The Stowe also values the tight-knit community. "We all help one another with photo shoots, loaning clothing and handbags, and sharing tips on the best suppliers in the industry, " she says. "Because of this transparency, we have created an even playing field that lacks the intense competition and guarded behaviour that is very common in the fashion industry. " Song felt similarly welcome in the start-up stage. "When Hicham [Ratnani] and I launched Frank And Oak five years ago, the response from the community was immediate, " he says. "There is an appetite in Montreal to support local talent and to cement Montreal's place on the world stage. " With reputable fashion schools, including LaSalle College, Université du Quebec à Montréal and Cégep Marie-Victorin, producing nearly 500 graduates each year in disciplines ranging from fashion design to marketing, the city also provides a steady stream of talent favourable to local companies.
And so, to help with the protective equipment shortages, Maïa Nadeau Godard et Jaylen Laroche-Boafo, both Milan's mentees, put their projects on pause to start making hand-made masks next week. For Maïa, they made a biomimetic version that tricks us into thinking she used her own braided hairdo as a means of holding the mask on. "The most valuable skills I developed in college weren't necessarily acquired through the classes themselves, but through the opportunities, I got from the network I built because of the program, " Émile Lemay-Racine, a recent graduate in industrial design with a specialization in shoemaking from the University of Montreal, is currently brainstorming ways to make masks with 3D printing, a technology he's been using for the platform soles of his shoes. Tommy Lecomte, a college graduate from LaSalle who applied to ESM for fall 2020, reflects on the current events, explaining why he doesn't regret his decision. "The most valuable skills I developed in college weren't necessarily acquired through the classes themselves, but through the opportunities, I got from the network I built because of the program, " he said.
Something went wrong, but don't fret — let's give it another shot.
"Students really don't have outlets to promote their new collections and designs. Fashion Preview gives them that, " said Lolli. Designers who presented fashion shows included: Pierre-Olivier Allard, whose textile transformations and three-dimensional effects are at the heart of his aesthetics GENIAEVELINA by designer Genia De Marco, who has a special interest in print and textiles, incorporating a painter's aesthetic in her work. Influences often come from cultural traditions, mythologies and folklore. LAKUACHIMOTO, a unisex line aiming to be inclusive and progressive. This first collection, called Bully Proof, is a mix between streetwear and couture. Process Visual by Jessy Colucci, who started his brand one year ago as a student. He won Telio's national design award in 2018. Pedram Karimi, a vegan-inspired brand of minimal yet poetic non-gendered garments. Pop-up stores of accessory designers Aeer Bags, SYP Workshop, Guillotine, K8 Jewelry, Kris Warren and Nina Nanas Jewelry will also be on site.
Montreal's fashion students on dealing creatively with the uncertainty of the moment What is happening to schools outside the big fashion capitals? Just like for all fashion design students globally, in Montreal, Canada, the moment of the final show feels like "the point" of a fashion degree. After an endless series of trials and errors, the final presentation is supposed to be the time and space for them to reveal to the industry what they're capable of. As much as Montreal fashion shows might not have the international reach and exposure of universities in London or New York, they remain a starting point to introduce the graduates to local industry, which thrives on nurturing emerging talents. For this year's graduates, things won't be the same. Given the current situation with COVID-19, fashion shows, including student showcases, are cancelled. Antoine Dufresne-Fortin, a student currently graduating at the École Supérieure de mode de l'ESG UQAM (ESM) in Montréal, began sewing and designing couple months before the lockdown, bringing half his collection together by the time it happened.
