I began writing in the first person (something I never did) and always in the present tense. My sentences became shorter, never longer than six words. I would use dialogue between characters to move the plot, characterization and backstory. Basically, my writing got better. But were my struggles, like those of the authors mentioned, what transformed my talent. Are all writers and artists destined to suffer on some level? Perhaps if an artists has never had their heart broken, they'll never be able to place a beating heart behind their work for the viewer to find and discover their own.
